Mel Kenyon is the all-time ''Champion of Midget Auto Racing.'' At the time of his induction into the National Midget Racing Hall of Fame in 1984, he had already won six National Championships and recorded his 100th feature win in USAC midget competition. He won his seventh National title in 1985 and continues to add to his record number of victories. In 1965, a year after his first midget championship, he was badly burned in a Championship Car and lost the fingers and thumb on his left hand. In 1966 he returned to racing utilizing a special glove and was 2nd in the midget points. He also drove in his first of eight 500 Mile Races and placed 5th. He finished 3rd in 1968 and 4th in both 1969 and 1973 at Indy. Mel's success has been a team effort. His brother Don has been the chief mechanic on his cars, and they were joined by their father to form 3-K Racing. The team has won over 90 National Championship Midget races as car owners. When age and debilitating injuries to his wife required a life closer to home Mel won the Midwest based NAMARS Championship three times while in his sixties. Originally from Davenport, Iowa, the ''Champion'' calls Lebanon, Indiana home.
